FSSAI emphasises adoption of bio-pesticides in tea production

Food regulator FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao on Friday stressed on adoption of bio-pesticides to ensure safety and quality of tea production.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) CEO Rao addressed a gathering of tea growers and tea planters during an interactive session held on Friday in Kellyden, Assam.

The event saw active participation from key stakeholders, including officials from FSSAI, the Tea Board, Tea Research Institute, tea planters, tea processors, industry associations and Food and Drug Department of the state, the regulator said in a statement.

The focal point of the discussion was enhancing traceability and testing measures for raw materials, emphasising the need for screening every batch for pesticide residues and adherence to Maximum Residue Limits (MRL) of pesticides usage as prescribed in the Food Safety and Standards Regulations of 2011 (FSSR).

“Rao emphasised the importance of adopting bio-pesticides and encouraged collaboration with the Tea Board for joint inspection, sampling and testing processes,” the statement said.

During the session, the Tea Board stressed the significance of awareness campaigns among planters to educate them about the maintenance of a harvesting gap to ensure safe agricultural practices.

Planters raised concerns about the use of unauthorised pesticides in tea cultivation and urged the state government to impose a ban on such substances.

Processors advocated for the provision of rapid testing kits at the farm gate level to streamline pesticide testing.
Scientific panel members engaged in detailed deliberations on specific pesticides, monitoring procedures and the prevention of off-label use.

FSSAI is extending financial assistance to Assam for the upgrading of laboratories dedicated to pesticide testing.
“The need for regular interaction with all stakeholders and the formulation of a time-bound action plan to guarantee the availability of safe tea to consumers was also stressed upon during the meeting,” the statement said.

The event also featured key speakers such as Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce & Industry and Chairman of the Tea Board; Saurav Pahari, IAS, Deputy Chairman, Tea Board, Kolkata; Inoshi Sharma, Executive Director, FSSAI and other senior officials from FSSAI, scientific panel members and representatives from various industry associations.

Apeejay Surrendra Group to Exit Tea Garden Business

Apeejay Surrendra Group, one of the largest privately held diversified business houses in the country, is all but bidding adieu to the business of tea plantation.

The group, which own the iconic Calcutta landmarks such as The Park Hotel, Flury’s and Oxford Bookstore, reached an understanding to sell two of their remaining estates on Monday and talks are on to dispose off the rest, keeping just one, where it plans to develop social infrastructure such as a school, hospital and hotel.

At the height of the group’s association with tea plantations, Apeejay had 17 gardens in Assam, producing about 24 million kg of its own crop, making it the third largest tea producer in India. The assets were acquired by the promoter Paul family during 1977 to 1982 and held through three companies Assam Frontier, Empire and Singlo.

The Dhunseri group, promoted by Chandra Kumar Dhanuka, has snapped up four tea gardens in Assam from Warren Tea Ltd, joining a handful of Indian planters to have more than 10 million kilograms of own crop.

The gardens, located at the Tinsukia district of Assam, are capable of producing about 3.3 million kilograms of tea in a year. Three of the estates — Duamara, Tara and Deohall — are being bought by Dhunseri Tea & Industries Ltd, a listed entity, for Rs 90.8 crore.

Nearly Half of Darjeeling Tea Estates are on Sale

              darjeeling tea

Nearly half of Darjeeling tea estates are on sale

Nearly half of Darjeeling’s tea estates, numbering around 35-40, are up for sale as planters are unable to run the operations smoothly in the absence of international buyers from Europe and Japan who used to buy good volumes of Darjeeling tea, and increasing production cost.

A liquidity crisis, high wages and falling tea prices are impacting the profitability of Darjeeling planters, forcing them to look out for buyers.

Heat Decimates China's Summer Tea Harvest

Predictions that China’s tea-growing regions are vulnerable to extreme hotspots have come to pass.

Three sequential extreme temperature events in China now span almost 90 days, affecting 900 million people in 17 provinces from southwestern Sichuan to coastal Jiangsu and Zhejiang. According to the National Meteorological Administration, the average national temperature in August was 1.2C higher than the 22.4C norm. Temperatures have soared to 42C (more than 107 degrees Fahrenheit). What was once considered once-in-a-century extreme heatwaves – are 30 times more likely today, given the current level of global warming.

Assam small tea growers resent hike in workers’ wages

Small tea growers in Assam have resented the State government’s “unilateral” decision to increase the daily wage of plantation workers across gardens big and small to ₹232.

Assam’s Labour Department had, through a notification issued a few days ago, enhanced the daily wage by ₹27, with effect from August 1. The daily wage of a tea worker in the Brahmaputra Valley is now ₹232, while that of southern Assam’s Barak Valley is ₹210.
